Launched in 2007, Okarma has been providing the promotional and corporate wear market with an ethical
choice. Climate change, creating sustainable clothing, reducing waste and recycling are hot topics, not just within the garment industry, but in the world at large. As the public have become more aware of these issues, the demand for clothing that highlights their environmental responsibility has grown. Okarma provides the promotional market with an ethical choice of garment: a responsible alternative that will
leave a minimal environmental footprint, and makes a positive difference to the people at every stage in production. Okarma is pleased to announce the launch of five new products to the range, including the much requested children’s t-shirt, the hotly awaited organic hoodie and sweat and two essential organic bags.

The cotton used in Okarma garments is grown on 100% Control Union certified farm co-operatives in
India, and then transported by road to one of the major organic spinning plants in India. From there,
the yarn for the clothing is transported again by road to our factory in Bangladesh, and for the
bags, to our partner factory in India. From seed to shop, our organic cotton is inspected,
evaluated, labelled and stored with complete traceability and transparency of procedure, as we
believe that establishing good supplier relations is of the utmost importance. We have committed to
long-term partnerships with our farms, spinners and manufacturers, which we think creates security
with the people we work with.
Most people are horrified to discover that conventional cotton production involves the
extensive and damaging use of soil fumigants, synthetic fertilisers, highly toxic pesticides,
herbicides, fungicides and defoliants, all of which can lead to a multiple of health and environmental
problems. By contrast, organic cotton is grown without the use of synthetic fertilisers, growth
regulators, chemical pesticides, irrigation or genetic engineering. Many of the 25,000 farmers who now produce organic cotton in over 22 countries report that by using non-chemical alternatives to pesticides they are able to avoid getting into debt from the purchase of pesticides and enjoy farm land on
which they can grow food safely for their families. The issue of ensuring producers in the developing
world receive a decent wage is closely linked with the move towards organic, which often results in
higher incomes for farmers.
From the biodegradable plastic in our packs, 100% recycled card for swing tags, and outer cartons that contain some recycled fibre, all packaging is sourced to achieve the smallest impact on the environment.
Certification is by the industry recognised authority, completed at farm, processing and factory levels. Organic cotton is grown on farms grown without the use of synthetic fertilisers, growth
regulators, chemical pesticides or genetic engineering. Full records are retained for
every stage and process, with monitoring by batch (batch numbers accompany every garment).

The move towards organic textiles produced without harmful chemicals is becoming
as important as the same direction being taken by the food industry. To properly
protect the land and the people working on it we must all increasingly focus on safe and
ethical means of production at every stage. Okarma fully supports the Moral Fibre
Campaign to achieve 10% of all cotton production to be organic by 2010.
